Chapter 15

Cassie tossed her backpack on the desk chair and sank down onto the bed. Peace. Serenity. No one walking into her bedroom unwelcome. She yanked off her boots and tossed them toward the closet. She decided that she would go straight to bed. Exhaustion had kicked in. The emotional kind. It was early evening but being here was a luxury. She could rest and sleep without interruption. Other than picking up books and food at the café now and then, she might just hibernate here for the entire weekend. Three luxurious days without her sister. Without anyone.

She unzipped her jeans, pulled them and her panties off and tossed them across the room toward the desk chair. They landed on top of her backpack. She’d unpack tomorrow. Not that she had brought that much with her. She’d wait until Monday to pick up more of her things. Right now she just wanted to savor the feel of lying in bed knowing that she was completely alone. No one was going to disturb her.

She unbuttoned her flannel shirt and tossed it in the same pile. Slipping off her bra and T-shirt, she replaced them with her oversized nightshirt from her backpack. Then she pulled back the covers and slid between the sheets. She’d leave the soft nightstand lamp on for a while. It wasn’t that she was afraid of the dark. She never had been, except for the few months that followed her brother’s death. Or maybe it was a year. Or two. But this was a new bed for her. A new room. She’d been here before, but had never slept here.

At the sound of the doorknob turning, she jolted, then quickly realized it was probably Matt or Arielle looking for something they’d left there before their wedding. But when the door opened, she knew immediately that it wasn’t either of them.

“Alex.”

“I didn’t mean to startle you.”

What was she thinking leaving the door unlocked? Obviously she wasn’t. “What are you doing here?”

“I followed you.” He stepped into the room and closed the door behind him. The light was dim but he could see her clearly, those vibrant emerald eyes staring up at him.

She could feel him across the room as if he were touching her. Even then she felt herself melting into his embrace. If being in her power meant not giving into him, she was doomed. But then wasn’t she really just giving into her own desires? So, where did that leave her? Desperate for him? And powerless?

It was her own fault, she realized, if she got her heart broken again. She had left the door unlocked.

When she didn’t say anything, he took a step closer. “If you don’t want me here, Cass, you’ll have to tell me you want me to leave.”

“I don’t want you here.”

He tossed his jacket across the room on the pile of clothes that were already there. Then he sat down on the edge of the bed just as she sat up.

“Why are you still here?”

“You didn’t tell me you want me to leave.
